All 69 campsites in the Pedernales Falls main loop share the same spec sheet β 30-amp electric, water spigot, picnic table, fire ring, lantern post, $20/night, up to 8 people. On paper they’re identical. In practice, campers consistently rate some sites far above others on the things the spec sheet doesn’t capture: shade, privacy, restroom distance, and back-in ease.
We compiled this ranking from aggregated camper reviews and the site photos on the official reservation system β here’s where to point your reservation, and what to avoid.
The Standouts, According to Campers
Sites 7, 8, 9, and 11 come up most consistently in reviews for the combination that matters most in Texas: deep shade and buffer from neighbors. These sit among mature Ashe juniper and oak that block afternoon sun β the difference between a usable campsite and a convection oven from June through September.
Sites 39, 42, and 51 earn repeated mentions for juniper cover and privacy β reviewers describe them as feeling tucked away from the loop’s foot traffic while staying an easy walk from restrooms.
Treat these as the shortlist to check first when your reservation window opens. If they’re taken, the selection criteria below matter more than any specific number.
How to Evaluate Any Site Before Booking
The reservation system shows photos and details for individual sites. Five things to check:
Shade orientation. Look for canopy on the west and south sides of the pad β that’s where the brutal afternoon sun comes from. A site shaded only in the morning is barely shaded at all.
Distance to restrooms. The sweet spot is 100β200 yards: close enough for convenience (especially with kids), far enough to avoid the foot traffic, door sounds, and light spill. Reviewers consistently flag the sites immediately beside restroom buildings as the loop’s noisiest.
Pad length and slide room if you’re bringing an RV or trailer β the shadiest sites tend to be the tightest. Our RV guide covers this trade-off in detail.
Neighbor sightlines. The loop’s vegetation varies a lot; the photos reveal which sites stare directly into the next pad and which have a juniper screen.
Levelness. Most pads are decent, but this is Hill Country β bring leveling blocks regardless.
What About Riverside Sites?
A common misconception worth correcting: the main campground loop is not on the river. The river access nearest camp is a walk, and the park’s namesake falls are a few-mile drive from the loop. No drive-up site at Pedernales Falls puts the water at your doorstep β which is also why the campground sits safely out of the flash-flood zone. If waking up beside water is the priority, private riverfront glamping and camping properties outside the park are the honest answer.
The Primitive Alternative
For solitude that no drive-up site can match, the park’s Wolf Ridge primitive area is a 2-mile hike from the trailhead parking (4 miles round trip carrying everything), max 4 people per site, no pets, no open fires (containerized fuel stoves only), no potable water, and chemical toilets. It’s a genuine backpacking experience 45 minutes from Austin β and the darkest stargazing in the park (see our stargazing guide). Full details in the camping guide.
Booking Strategy
The window opens 5 months out, and the well-reviewed sites on spring and fall weekends go almost immediately. The play: set a calendar reminder for exactly 5 months before your target Friday, log in early, and have your shortlist (7, 8, 9, 11, then 39, 42, 51) ready to check in order. Weekdays and winter, you can be picky at your leisure.
If everything’s booked: cabins, glamping, and hotels cover the overflow, and cancellations do pop back into the system β checking a week out sometimes pays off.
